Since there are a lot of "[genre] games" threads floating around, I figured I might as well make one for horror. :c If there's already one of these, feel free to beat me with a newspaper or what have you; the search didn't turn up anything when I looked.
I'll start off. I'm not big on the gory aspect of horror games; what I really love is psychological horror, like the Silent Hill series (or at least... all of them until Team Silent disbanded). I'm all for Lovecraftian elements, as opposed to blood spewing all over for no apparent reason.
I'm trying to figure out if Fatal Frame is actually scary, because at the moment it doesn't seem like it...
What scary games does RMS like? :3

I liked "Haunting Ground" and "Obscure 1/ 2". <-- There is two links there, since the company refused to have it all on one site.. The RE series is also a win for me.. But everybody knows about them. -Pow |

used to play or watch my bro play Slient Hill back on the PS1. It was pretty scary (to me), i wouldn't play it alone in the room when it got to the ugly world.

I heavily disagree there descent..
Have you every tried survival horror games, or ever seen a trailer of the genre? Fatal-frame is nothing like you describe it, nor is condemned.. there are rarely any guns in condemned let alone fatal-frame.
horror games have their variations.. and some of them are pretty funky.

The generic "Look at this, there be some monsters, here's gratuitous blood, I HOPE YOU'RE SCARED LOL!" kind of thing doesn't really get me either. I was never a fan of cheap scares, like things popping out of nowhere. Personally I'm bigger on atmosphere, the psychological aspect of things, etc. Silent Hill was doing really well with it before... well, they gave the series to an American development team. x3 Americanized horror tends to just throw things at you and give you a big gun. I miss when games actually scared me and kept me up at night. Nobody does it right anymore. :< |
